William Kuby is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century U.S. history, with emphases on marriage and family dynamics, sexuality, legal history, African American history, and queer studies. He is the author of Conjugal Misconduct: Defying Marriage Law in the Twentieth-Century United States (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and is currently working on a new book project titled (Hetero)Sexual Education: Youth Pageantry and the Molding of Straight Culture, examining children's mock marriage pageants.

Dr. Kuby’s research explores themes such as legal challenges to marital norms, queer history, and the intersection of race and sexuality. His work has been recognized with awards including the Prism Award for campus queer advocacy (2021) and the UT Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award (2019). He also serves as the inaugural Executive Director of the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History (CLBGTH), an affiliate of the American Historical Association.
His publications and presentations address topics like trial marriages, divorce law, and the cultural politics of sexuality. Recent conference engagements include panels on queer-inclusive curriculum development and the history of Black-white marriage in the Jim Crow era. Kuby’s teaching spans courses on queer history, U.S. cultural history, and historical methods.
