William John O'Brien

William John O'Brien is a Professor in the Ceramics Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), teaching courses including Getting Weird & Hilarious Ceramics and Direct Access Ceramics for Spring and Fall 2025 terms. His Chicago-based studio practice spans drawing, painting, ceramic sculpture, metalwork, and large-scale installations, exhibited internationally at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2014 survey), MAD Museum, and Witte de With.

O'Brien's artistic research centers on identity exploration through material processes, drawing inspiration from Modernism and Outsider Art's historical material usage.
