William Ion is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management at the University of Strathclyde, within the Faculty of Engineering. He previously served as Head of Department (2002–2008), Deputy Head (2012–2022), and Vice Dean (Knowledge Exchange) for the Faculty of Engineering (2017–2022). His academic career began in 1986 after industry experience, and he has remained a central figure in advancing design and manufacturing research and education.
His research interests span advanced manufacturing, design for manufacture, additive manufacturing, collaborative design environments, and engineering education. He emphasizes sustainable and knowledge-driven manufacturing systems. His work integrates digital prototyping, information management, and innovation in industrial processes.
The recent publications reflect a strong focus on sustainability in manufacturing and advanced materials characterization. These works highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining engineering, environmental science, and digital modeling.

William Ion has supervised 16 postgraduate researchers and led major funded projects exceeding £20 million, including initiatives with EPSRC, EU, and industry. He founded the Advanced Forming Research Centre and was instrumental in establishing the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult. He has also led educational innovations such as the Product Design Engineering programme and the Erasmus Mundus International Masters in Global Innovation Management.
He is actively involved in research groups focusing on advanced manufacturing and materials, contributing to both fundamental and applied research. His leadership extends to international collaborations, professional networks like the Design Society, and major conferences in engineering design education.
