William Hoynes is a Professor of Sociology and holds the Jane Baker Nord ’42 Chair in Media Studies at Vassar College. He served as Vassar’s Dean of the Faculty from 2019 to 2024, during which he oversaw significant faculty hiring, pandemic response leadership, and major grant initiatives. Prior roles include Chair of the Sociology Department and Director of the American Studies and Media Studies Programs. He joined Vassar in 1992 after earning his PhD in Sociology from Boston College.

Research Interests: Media and society, sociology of culture, social theory, youth sports industry, and democratic citizenship. His work examines media industry structures, journalism ethics, and the intersection of culture and power.
Publications Highlights: Co-authored More Than Just a Game: How the Youth Sports Industry Is Changing the Way We Parent (2025), and authored Public Television for Sale (awarded the 1995 Goldsmith Book Prize). His research has been featured in journals like Sport in Society and Humanity & Society.
Awards: Includes the Goldsmith Book Prize, McGuffey Longevity Award, and Robert Picard Book Award. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, addressing issues of media ethics, social justice, and cultural dynamics.
Grants & Leadership: Co-PI on major institutional grants during his deanship. His pandemic leadership included co-chairing VassarTogether, the college’s crisis committee.
