William Hasselberger is an Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Portugal's Institute for Political Studies (IEP), where he serves as Director of the Digital Ethics Laboratory (LED), a center for advanced interdisciplinary research on emerging technologies and their societal impact. He also holds leadership positions as vice-president of the UCP Research Ethics Commission for Technology, Social Sciences and the Humanities (CETCH) and as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Hasselberger's research spans critical intersections of moral and political philosophy, Artificial Intelligence ethics, the psychology of ethical virtue, and human well-being. His scholarly work appears in prestigious journals including Social Research, The European Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy, The Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, The New Atlantis, and Culture, Medicine and Psychiatry. Born in Ankara, Turkey, he has extensive international experience living and working throughout Europe and North America.
His publication portfolio reveals three dominant research trajectories: first, critical examinations of AI's limitations regarding common sense reasoning and moral judgment; second, analyses of authoritarian power structures and their threats to liberal democracy in the digital age; and third, philosophical investigations connecting classical virtue ethics to contemporary questions of human flourishing. This integrative approach bridges historical philosophical traditions with urgent technological and political challenges of our time.
As an educator, Dr. Hasselberger teaches specialized courses including Artificial Intelligence and Politics, Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Introduction to Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE), Politics, Ethics and Artificial Intelligence, The Pursuit of Happiness: From Philosophy to Political Economy, and Wisdom and Leadership: Lessons from Classical Philosophy. Through the Digital Ethics Laboratory, he fosters interdisciplinary dialogue on emerging technologies' ethical dimensions, positioning himself at the forefront of technology ethics scholarship with significant implications for policy and practice.
