William Gladhill is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University. He holds a PhD from Stanford University (2008) and specializes in ancient Mediterranean studies, focusing on the period 2000 BCE–600 CE with a geographical emphasis on Europe. His research explores the intersection of classical literature, ritual practices, and societal structures, particularly in Roman contexts. He teaches courses such as CLAS 310 (Intermediate Latin 1) and CLAS 612 (Topics in Latin Literature).
Professor Gladhill’s scholarship examines themes like Roman alliances, human sacrifice, and the poetics of power in works by authors such as Vergil, Lucretius, and Ovid. His book Rethinking Roman Alliance (2016) redefines understandings of Roman sociopolitical dynamics through literary analysis. He also contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues on ancient philosophy, spatial studies, and cultural mythology.
His teaching and research are further reflected in his encyclopedia entries, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in journals like ICS, CA, and Vergilius. His work bridges classical texts with broader questions about empire, identity, and cultural coherence in antiquity.
