Prof William Gillin is a Professor of Experimental Physics at the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London. He is affiliated with the Centre for Chemical Research and the Centre for Experimental and Applied Physics. His research focuses on organic materials, particularly lanthanide complexes for optical amplification, graphene-based optoelectronics, and organic spintronics. Gillin has pioneered the use of fluorinated organic molecules to enhance erbium ion efficiency in optical gain materials, leading to the spin-off company Chromosol Ltd in 2017. His work also includes advancing graphene as an indium tin oxide replacement in OLEDs and studying spin dynamics in organic semiconductors.
Key research interests include molecular sensitization of lanthanides, organic spin-valve technology, and energy transfer mechanisms in optoelectronic devices. Gillin’s contributions span over 100 publications, with recent advancements in memristor technology, perovskite thin films, and nanostructured composites. His interdisciplinary approach bridges physics, chemistry, and materials science to address challenges in next-generation optoelectronics and energy-efficient devices.
