Dr William George Grey is an MRC Career Development Award Fellow in the Department of Biology at the University of York. He leads an independent research program focused on protein homeostasis in stem cell systems, with particular emphasis on haematopoietic stem cells and acute myeloid leukaemia.
Dr Grey completed his PhD at King's College London with Dr Veronica Yu and Professor David Grimwade, studying protein phosphorylation and degradation across embryonic, neural and haematopoietic stem cell systems. He continued his research as a postdoctoral fellow at The Francis Crick Institute with Professor Dominique Bonnet, focusing on haematopoietic stem cells and acute myeloid leukaemia.
Dr Grey's research program investigates protein homeostasis ("Proteostasis") in normal and malignant stem cells of the haematopoietic system. His lab studies how protein translation, folding, modification and degradation regulate healthy and malignant stem cell development, with a predominant focus on the haematopoietic system and cancerous transformation to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). His work combines molecular, cellular and systems approaches to understand stem cell biology and develop new therapeutic strategies for blood cancers. Current projects include studying the CKS1/CKS2 proteostasis axis in haematopoietic stem cells, investigating RET signaling in stem cell maintenance, and developing novel approaches to target leukaemic stem cells in AML.
Analysis of Dr Grey's recent publications reveals a strong focus on haematopoietic stem cell biology, proteostasis mechanisms, and acute myeloid leukaemia. His research consistently explores the role of protein regulation in stem cell function and malignant transformation, with particular attention to the CKS1/CKS2 axis, kinase signaling networks, and therapeutic targeting of leukaemia stem cells. His work spans basic molecular mechanisms to translational applications, demonstrating a clear trajectory from fundamental discovery to potential clinical impact.
Dr Grey has received several prestigious awards and fellowships:
- John Goldman Fellowship by Leukaemia UK
- MRC Career Development Award
- Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group project grant
- Royal Society Westminster Fellowship
Dr Grey actively mentors students and early-career researchers. His current lab includes PDRA Juliana Miranda, MRC-DiMeN PhD student Megan Guthrie, MRC CARP partner & consultant haematologist Anjum Kahn, Senior Research Associate Zahra Masoumi, PDRA William Critchley, YGRS PhD student Kimrun Kaur, and MRes student Lauren Wheeler. His alumni include Beatrice Rix (now a Crick PhD student), Adam Rogerson (Research Associate at Monash), Katie Trueman (final year student at Cardiff University), and Max Gregoryan (BBSRC DTP PhD student). Dr Grey has secured significant research funding from organizations including the Medical Research Council (MRC), Leukaemia UK, Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group, and Lady Tata Trust.
Dr Grey founded the London Stem Cell Network during his time in London and maintains strong links with scientists across stem cell systems. He has been actively involved with the Brilliant Club since 2012, working to bring scientists closer to politicians, the general public, and primary and secondary education. His lab is developing the UK PDX BioBank, which is expected to launch soon.
