William Generett Jr. serves as Senior Vice President of Civic Engagement and External Relations at Duquesne University while holding academic appointments as Adjunct Professor at the Thomas R. Kline School of Law and Executive-in-Residence at the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business. He oversees the Office of Community Engagement, Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, and Government Affairs functions, driving Duquesne's mission of community exchange since its 1878 founding.
Generett earned his B.S. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Morehouse College followed by a J.D. from Emory University School of Law. He maintains active law licenses in Pennsylvania and Georgia, having previously practiced real estate and corporate law in Atlanta, and received an honorary doctorate from Carlow University in 2016.
His professional expertise spans Law, Corporate Law, Real Estate Law, Community Development, Economic Development, Civic Engagement, and Innovation Policy. Generett has dedicated his career to connecting underserved communities with economic opportunities through initiatives like Urban Innovation21, where he gained national recognition for advancing equality in Western Pennsylvania's innovation economy.
Generett's honors include an Honorary Doctorate from Carlow University (2016). His civic leadership extends to appointments by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf to the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (2018) and by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Pritzker to the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (2014).
As a prominent Pittsburgh civic leader, Generett serves on boards including The Pittsburgh Foundation, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Carnegie Museums, Center of Life, Shady Side Academy, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Business Advisory Council. His prior role as CEO of Urban Innovation21 established him as a key advocate for underrepresented populations in economic development.
Under Generett's direction, Duquesne's civic engagement strategy focuses on five impact areas: growth and innovation, health and wellness, education, individual empowerment, and volunteerism, creating structured partnerships that fulfill the university's service mission through the Office of Civic Engagement and External Relations.
