William F. Connell is a Professor of History and affiliated with the Honors Program at Christopher Newport University. He specializes in Latin American history, focusing on Nahuatl-speaking indigenous groups, colonial governance in Mexico City, and the Atlantic World. His research examines violence, authority, and political structures in pre- and post-colonial Mexico.
Connell holds a PhD in History from Tulane University and MA/BA degrees from the University of South Carolina. He authored the book After Moctezuma (2011) and numerous articles. He served as Department Chair from 2013–2019 and participates in the Latin American Studies program.
His presentations include discussions on indigenous political transformations in Tenochtitlan (2018) and colonial-era legal cases in Mexico City (2018). His work bridges indigenous governance systems with colonial administrative practices.
