William Epling is the Ann Warrick Lacy Distinguished Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia. His career spans academia, national labs (e.g., Pacific Northwest National Lab), and industry (Cummins Inc.), providing a unique interdisciplinary perspective.
He holds a B.S. from Virginia Tech (1992) and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida (1997), followed by a postdoc at Pacific Northwest National Lab (1997–1998). His research focuses on environmental catalysis, including catalyst design, degradation mechanisms, and surface science applied to diesel emissions reduction.
Research Interests include:
- Catalyst Surface Degradation
- Sulfur Poisoning Mechanisms
- NOx Storage/Reduction Catalysts
- Propene Ammoxidation
- Zeolite-Based Materials
Recent Publications emphasize sulfur effects on Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts, Pd/Pt oxidation catalysts, and NOx storage degradation. His work bridges fundamental surface chemistry with industrial applications in emission control.
He received the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Fellowship (2023), recognizing his contributions to catalysis research. His lab actively explores novel catalyst designs and reactor engineering for sustainable emissions reduction.
