Dr. William E. Cullinan is a Professor and Dean of the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University, leading the Department of Biomedical Sciences and directing the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center. He holds a B.S. in Physical Therapy from Marquette (1981), a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia (1991), and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan (1991-1995). His research focuses on stress neurobiology, particularly the HPA axis and its link to mental illnesses like depression. He teaches anatomy and neuroscience courses, developed a renowned summer neuroanatomical dissection seminar, and received the 2002 Teaching Excellence Award.
Education:
- B.S., Marquette University (1981)
- Ph.D., University of Virginia (1991)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Michigan (1991-1995)
Research Interests: Dr. Cullinan investigates stress responses and psychiatric disorders through studies on the HPA axis, corticosteroid regulation, and brain pathways involved in chronic stress. His lab uses neuroanatomical, biochemical, and behavioral techniques to explore stress-related mechanisms, including traumatic brain injury effects and deep brain stimulation models for depression.
Awards:
- University’s Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence (2002)
Advising & Leadership: Dr. Cullinan oversees academic programs like pre-medical/dental/PA studies, the Undergraduate Summer Research Program, and the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center. He also manages the Sterilizer Monitoring Service (SMS) for laboratory safety.
Labs/Teams: The Cullinan Lab and the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center collaborate on cutting-edge studies of stress neurobiology, combining anatomical, molecular, and behavioral approaches to advance mental health research.
