William Daniels is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth, part of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on understanding past environmental changes through geological and biological indicators found in lake sediments, with primary emphasis on Arctic regions.
Research Expertise
Dr. Daniels specializes in climate, limnology and paleolimnology, biogeochemistry, water isotope systematics, and diatom analysis. His primary research area is the Arctic, though he also maintains projects in urban ponds and the Laurentian Great Lakes. He employs lipid biomarkers (GDGTs, diols, leaf waxes) and isotope ratios (D/H, 13C/12C, 15N/14N) for paleoclimate reconstructions, seeking to understand the complex interactions between Earth's climate, biosphere, and human population.
Lakes serve as natural integrators and recorders of environmental changes, with their sediments preserving historical archives. Dr. Daniels analyzes mineralogy, biological and chemical fossils, sediment grain size, and other sediment properties to decipher these past changes through meticulous laboratory and field work.
