Professor William Collins is a leading academic in climate processes and atmospheric chemistry at the University of Reading's Department of Meteorology. He specializes in Earth system modelling, climate impacts of short-lived pollutants, and biogeochemical feedbacks. His research spans climate change mitigation strategies, air quality, and ozone-nitrogen deposition effects on ecosystems.
Collins leads major projects like ECLIPSE (assessing short-lived pollutants) and contributed to IPCC assessments (e.g., 5th Assessment Report Chapter 8). He supervises PhD students such as Dr Laura Baker (climate policy modelling) and Chris Webber (air quality under climate change).
His work integrates global climate models (AerChemMIP, CMIP6) and machine learning to predict long-term climate trends. Collaborations include the World Bank's On Thin Ice report and UNEP's Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone.
Collins' office is located at BH1U16, and he can be reached at w.collins@reading.ac.uk. His research emphasizes bridging climate science with policy, particularly in methane reduction pathways and hydrogen economy benefits.
