Dr. William Cheung is a Professor and Director of the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia (UBC), holding a Canada Research Chair in Ocean Sustainability and Global Change. He leads the Changing Ocean Research Unit (CORU) and directs the SSHRC Partnership 'Solving the Sustainability Challenges at the Food-Climate-Biodiversity Nexus.' His research focuses on marine ecosystems' responses to global change, fisheries management, and policy-driven solutions across disciplines like oceanography, ecology, and social sciences.
Education: BSc (Hons) and MPhil from the University of Hong Kong, PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from UBC. Previously, he was a Lecturer at the University of East Anglia and a member of the IPCC and IPBES scientific teams.
Research interests include climate impacts on seafood supply, marine heatwaves, and aquaculture sustainability. He has published over 260 peer-reviewed papers and received awards like the 2024 A.G. Huntsman Medal and ICES Prix d’Excellence Award. His work bridges science and policy, informing global initiatives like the Paris Agreement.
Key students include Dr. Virginie Bornarel and Dr. Vianney Guibourd de Luzinais (2025 graduates). Grants and leadership roles include the Solving FCB Partnership and collaborations with the Sea Around Us and Ocean Decade Regional Collaborative Center.
