Burgess's research interrogates how religious discourse—particularly African American prophetic traditions—informs corporate communication, ethics, and intercultural dynamics. His work examines phenomenological dimensions of faith-based rhetoric through lenses of race, reconciliation, and integrated marketing strategies.
Notable scholarly outputs include "Souls of Fire: Ronald C. Arnett, Howard Thurman, and Prophetic Rhetoric" and "Becoming Human: The Rhetoric of Race and the Holy Spirit", reflecting his dual expertise in homiletics and communication theory.
His service to the university community encompasses Council on Undergraduate Education membership, Assistant Debate Coaching, and leadership in ECA Graduate Poster Sessions. Burgess actively participates in ASL immersion programs to support Gallaudet's bilingual mission, demonstrating commitment to Deaf-centered academic engagement.
