William Bubelis is an Associate Professor of Classics and Curator of the John Max Wulfing Coin Collection at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds a PhD in Classics from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on Greek history, epigraphy, economic history and numismatics, ancient religion's institutional dimensions, and the political economy of the ancient Near East. Bubelis examines how economic, religious, and state dynamics shaped Mediterranean developments (750-250 BCE). Notable works include Hallowed Stewards, analyzing Athenian religious stewardship and fiscal systems, and articles exploring coinage's role in cultural narratives.
His recent exhibitions, such as Coins Across Time, showcase how numismatics reveals historical and mythological narratives. Bubelis collaborates with institutions like the Washington University Libraries and co-presented with Emeritus Professor Sarantis Symeonoglou on the Wulfing Collection. His courses, such as 'Greek History: The Age of Alexander,' bridge ancient socio-political changes with modern relevance.
As a curator, he oversees 16,000+ coins in the Wulfing Collection, emphasizing their dual roles as historical artifacts and economic tools. His work highlights how material culture—coins, inscriptions, and literary texts—offers insights into governance, religion, and trade in antiquity.
