He maintains multiple affiliations including the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program, National Clinician Scholars Program, Program in Addiction Medicine, and Yale-Drug use, Addiction, and HIV prevention Research Scholars (DAHRS). Dr. Becker directs the Opioid Reassessment Clinic at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System and serves as principal or co-principal investigator on multiple research projects funded by the VA, NIH, PCORI, and FDA.
Dr. Becker's research focuses on improving chronic pain treatment in general medical settings, particularly addressing the complex overlap between chronic pain and opioid use disorder. His work spans clinical epidemiology, addiction medicine, and pain management. His research examines opioid prescribing patterns, medication-assisted treatment effectiveness, patient experiences in pain care, and implementation of evidence-based practices in Veterans Health Administration settings.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the opioid epidemic, with particular attention to veteran populations. His work combines quantitative epidemiological approaches with qualitative methods to understand patient and provider experiences. Dr. Becker's research portfolio shows consistent emphasis on practical interventions that can improve pain management while reducing opioid-related harms.
Dr. Becker received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 2001 and completed his internal medicine training at Yale University, where he served as Chief Resident. His BA is from Yale University (1995).
As a clinician-researcher, Dr. Becker bridges clinical practice at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System with academic research at Yale. His work has direct implications for clinical practice guidelines and healthcare policy related to pain management and substance use disorders.
