William B. Lacy is a Professor of Sociology in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of California, Davis. He previously served as Vice Provost for University Outreach and International Programs at UC Davis (1999–2014), and held leadership roles at Cornell University and Penn State University. His research focuses on the sociology of science, agricultural research structures, education outreach, and international higher education policy. Lacy holds a B.S. from Cornell University (1964), M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Colgate University (1965), and M.A./Ph.D. in Sociology/Social Psychology from the University of Michigan (1971 and 1975).
His work bridges disciplinary boundaries, examining the intersections of science, policy, and society. Notable publications include Plants, Power and Profit (1991) and Making Nature, Shaping Culture (1995), which analyze biotechnology and biodiversity. He has received grants from NSF, USDA, and major foundations, and his awards include AAAS Fellowship and two Fulbright Awards (Brazil and Japan).
