William Acree is a Professor of Spanish and affiliate faculty in American Culture Studies and Performing Arts at Washington University. He serves as Vice Dean of Interdisciplinary Initiatives and Innovation and Co-Director of the Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures within the College of Arts & Sciences. Acree holds a BA from Berry College and a PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
His research focuses on cultural history, popular and material culture, and transdisciplinary storytelling. Notable works include Everyday Reading: Print Culture and Collective Identity in the Río de la Plata (2013) and Staging Frontiers: The Making of Modern Popular Culture in Argentina & Uruguay (2020), which received major awards. His current project explores political and communal origin stories.
Acree has led interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures, which has secured $8M+ in external funding. He co-developed A&S CREATES, a transdisciplinary doctoral program. His grants include NEH, Mellon, and Tinker Foundation support.
Acree’s awards include the 2013 and 2020 LASA Book Awards, Fulbright fellowships, and roles as Co-Editor of Empire’s End: Transnational Connections in the Hispanic World. He also co-edited volumes on Latin American cultural history and Black writers.
