William A. Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at Duke University, part of the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on the cultural history of Greece and Rome, with specializations in ancient books, reading practices, and musical notation. He has published extensively on figures like Plato, Hesiod, and Pliny, and produced foundational work on papyrus documents. His notable contributions include the Ancient Music Web Site showcasing Greek musical papyri and the Oxford Handbook to the Second Sophistic. Johnson teaches Greek, Latin, and cultural history courses at Duke, and has received numerous academic commendations.
Johnson's research integrates textual analysis with material culture studies, particularly through his work on papyrus bookrolls and mummy inscriptions. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary projects involving lidar technology and thermal control systems for space environments.
