Willem Vos is a Professor in Complex Photonic Systems (COPS) at the University of Twente since 2002. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Amsterdam (cum laude) and held a prestigious Fellowship at the Geophysical Laboratory (Carnegie Institution for Science, USA). His research focuses on photonic crystals, inverse opal structures, and control of spontaneous light emission via 3D photonic band gaps. His work has been cited over 40 times on average per paper, including a highly influential Science paper (>1350 citations).
His research spans physics, photonics, and material science, with a particular emphasis on photonic band gaps and silicon-based nanophotonic systems. His lab’s innovations bridge fundamental and applied science, engaging in collaborations with high-tech industries and SMEs.
He has received numerous honors, including the Snellius Medal, Descartes-Huygens Prize, and fellowships from the American Physical Society (APS) and the Optical Society of America (OSA). His former students hold faculty positions at leading institutes and leadership roles in major industries.
