Willem van der Bilt is a Research Professor at the University of Bergen's Department of Earth Science and Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, focusing on Quaternary geology and paleoclimate. His research reconstructs Late Quaternary climate variability using alpine glacier proxies and lake sediments from Arctic and sub-Antarctic regions.
Methodologies include geomorphological mapping, remote sensing, biomarker paleothermometry, and tephrochronology. Current projects integrate molecular paleohydrology and CT scanning to study geohazards and precipitation patterns.
He leads multiple grants including the Trond Mohn Foundation's PASTFACT project and coordinates international collaborations like SOUTHSPHERE. Outreach includes media contributions on climate change impacts in Spitsbergen.
