Willard P. Greenwood II is a Professor of English at Hiram College, where he has taught since 2001. He holds the endowed position of John S. Kenyon Professor of English and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Hiram Poetry Review, a publication active since 1966. His academic interests span Sports and literature, Literary theory, American literature, Fly fishing literature, and creative writing. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature with concentrations in Creative Writing and Poetry from Purdue University, along with an M.A. in English from Georgia State University and a B.A. in Classical Studies from the University of Maine.
Greenwood’s research uniquely intersects fly fishing with literary studies. His scholarly book Reading Cormac McCarthy (2009) and articles like The Bruiser as Boxing Americana (2013) highlight his analytical approach to sports in culture. His poetry chapbook Pelagic Mania (2017) is noted as the first to focus exclusively on fly fishing. His work has been recognized, including a notable selection in Best American Sports Writing 2012.
Outside academia, Greenwood actively practices fly fishing and tying, reflecting his dual passion for literature and outdoor pursuits. He teaches innovative courses like The Ethos and Practice of Fly Fishing and American Literature II, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections. His creative output includes poems and essays published in journals like The Drake and The American Fly Fisher.
