Will Stockton is a Professor and Chair of the Department of English at Clemson University, within the College of Arts and Humanities. He holds a PhD in English from Indiana University, Bloomington, and has been a faculty member since 2010, progressing from Assistant to Associate Professor and then to Full Professor. His research focuses on Renaissance Literature and Queer Studies, with notable works including Playing Dirty: Sexuality and Waste in Early Modern Comedy (2011) and Members of His Body: Shakespeare, Paul, and a Theology of Nonmonogamy (2017). He co-edited volumes such as Backward Gaze: Queer Renaissance Historiography (2009) and Sex Before Sex: Figuring the Act in Early Modern England (2013). His latest book, An Introduction to Queer Literary Studies: Reading Queerly (2022), serves as a foundational text for literary queer theory.
Stockton’s articles span topics like queer readings of Shakespearean plays, early modern marriage, and intersections of theology with nonmonogamy. He has held administrative roles including Director of Graduate Studies (2016–2020) and currently chairs the department. His work often bridges literary analysis with queer and feminist theory, contributing to debates on historical sexuality and contemporary critical frameworks. He is also involved in editorial roles for journals like Early Modern Culture and has presented widely at conferences such as the Shakespeare Association of America and the Modern Language Association.
