Wilfried Spaar

Dr. Wilfried Spaar is a Sinologist and Lecturer at Heidelberg University's Sinological Seminar since 1989. His expertise spans Chinese language pedagogy, classical and modern Sinology, and East Asian literary history. He holds a doctorate from Ruhr University Bochum (summa cum laude, 1980) and has held academic positions globally, including at National Taiwan Normal University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

His research focuses on premodern Chinese intellectual history, translation studies, and language-teaching methodologies. Notable works include critical analyses of Li Zhi's philosophy and bibliographies on Tang Dynasty poets. He developed Heidelberg's intensive preparatory Chinese course, recognized by the 1994 State Teaching Prize.

Awards: 1980 University Prize for outstanding humanities dissertation; 1994 Baden-Württemberg Teaching Prize. Active in academic exchanges with institutions in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the US. Currently coordinates advanced language training programs and maintains research interests in computational linguistics applications for Chinese studies.
