Wilbert Bartels is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Graduate School of Life Sciences and the Image Sciences Institute. He succeeded Max Viergever as director of the Image Sciences Institute in 2018 and oversees the PhD and MSc programs in Medical Imaging, the latter in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology. His career spans over two decades in medical imaging research.
- PhD in Applied Physics (Utrecht University, 2001)
- MSc in Applied Physics (Eindhoven University of Technology, 1997)
His research focuses on MRI physics and medical image analysis, particularly for clinical applications in neurosurgery and radiology. He develops advanced imaging techniques such as deep learning-based segmentation and augmented reality for surgical navigation, with applications in vascular interventions and MR-guided therapies.
Recent publications highlight his work in neurovascular imaging and MR-HIFU treatments, emphasizing automation, precision, and real-time guidance. His team has pioneered tools for segmentation of cerebral arteries, perfusion mapping, and augmented reality integration in surgical workflows.
Wilbert Bartels has supervised 19 PhD candidates and numerous MSc students. He leads the Image Sciences Institute and contributes to educational programs through lectures on MRI physics and medical imaging techniques. His work bridges engineering, computational methods, and clinical applications.
