Wil Robertson is an Associate Professor at Northeastern University, holding dual affiliations with the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research focuses on trustworthy computing architectures, web security, and malware analysis, with contributions to projects like WebLock (via his role as CTO at WebWise Security, Inc.).
Education: PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to Northeastern, he conducted postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley and worked with the UC Santa Barbara SecLab.
Research Interests:
- Web security and anomaly detection
- Adversarial program analysis for malware
- Electronic voting system security
- Automated vulnerability discovery
Recent Publications Highlight: Recent work emphasizes encryption protocols for mobile messaging (BabelCrypt, 2015) and automated hardening of web applications against client-side attacks (ZigZag, 2015). Earlier efforts include analyzing GUI-based access control vulnerabilities (2014) and OS-level private execution frameworks (2013).
Grants & Leadership: Principal Investigator on NSF-funded Scholarship for Service programs and ONR projects. Co-PI on multiple DARPA initiatives including DarkDroid (mobile malware analysis), Firmalice (firmware security), and Continuum (Java vulnerability detection). Received a 2014 NSF grant with Engin Kirda for binary software analysis tools.
Labs & Affiliations: Core member of the International Secure Systems Lab (ISS Lab), a transatlantic cybersecurity research collaboration.
