Wesley M. Cohen is the Snow Family Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He holds secondary appointments in the Department of Economics and School of Law within Duke’s Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. A leading scholar in technological change and innovation strategy, Cohen’s work bridges economics, management, and policy. His research explores R&D dynamics, intellectual property systems, and the division of innovative labor between firms and institutions.
Education: Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University (1981). Prior to Duke, he spent 20 years at Carnegie Mellon University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Business School.
Research Interests: Cohen focuses on how firms leverage external knowledge, manage innovation ecosystems, and navigate patent systems. Notable themes include large firm advantages in invention, absorptive capacity, and the economic impacts of public research. His work emphasizes practical policy implications for fostering innovation.
Grants & Recognition: Principal Investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation, Kauffman Foundation, and North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
