James J. Anton is the Wesley A. Magat Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, with secondary appointments in Duke’s Department of Economics and the University of North Carolina. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in 1984 and joined the Fuqua faculty in 1989 after teaching at SUNY Stony Brook. His research focuses on applied microeconomic theory and industrial organization, particularly issues involving information asymmetry, incentives, contracting, and intellectual property rights in competitive markets.
Key research areas include innovation incentives, procurement contracts, auctions, regulatory frameworks, and antitrust policy. His work has been published in top journals such as the American Economic Review, International Economic Review, and Journal of Economic Theory. Notable contributions include studies on dynamic pricing, strategic buyer behavior, patent infringement damages, and the impact of weak patent rights on innovation.
Professor Anton has received prestigious awards including the Bank of America Faculty Award (2007) and the Outstanding Professor Award from Duke’s Global Executive MBA program. He has served as Faculty Dean at Fuqua (2012–2015) and holds editorial roles in leading economics journals. His teaching spans managerial economics, competitive analysis, and global markets, emphasizing applied theory and real-world applications.
