Dr. Wesley B. Grueber is a Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics and Neuroscience at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and a Principal Investigator at Columbia's Zuckerman Institute. His academic appointments span multiple departments and programs including the Department of Neuroscience, the Doctoral Program in Neurobiology and Behavior (where he serves as Codirector), the Columbia Translational Neuroscience Initiative, and the Doctoral Program in Biological Sciences.
Dr. Grueber's research focuses on understanding how neurons develop their complex branching structures, particularly dendrites, and how these structures form functional neural circuits. His laboratory investigates three primary research areas: constructing somatosensory circuits, organization and function of proprioceptive systems, and functional investigation of internal body sensing, primarily using Drosophila (fruit fly) as a model organism. His landmark discovery of dendritic self-avoidance mediated by the DSCAM gene has provided crucial insights into neural circuit formation with implications for understanding neurological disorders.
