Werner Hertzog is a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology (ISEK), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Zurich. His research bridges anthropology with cognitive sciences and economics, focusing on cultural and cognitive dynamics in agricultural societies undergoing modernization.

Dr. Hertzog’s work spans Latin America (Brazil, Mexico) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan), investigating themes like cooperation, resource management, categorization, ritual belief systems, reputation economies, ethnic identity, and land kinship structures. His methodological approach combines qualitative ethnography with quantitative analysis to address interdisciplinary questions.
His doctoral research explored social change’s impact on cooperation and resource management among Tzotzil-Maya communities in Chiapas, Mexico. Since 2022, he has extended his fieldwork to Kazakhstan’s Zhetysu region, analyzing land use and distribution patterns among local farmers.
