Professor Wenhui Song serves as Professor of Biomaterials and Medical Engineering and Head of the UCL Centre for Biomaterials in Surgical Reconstruction and Regeneration within the Division of Surgery and Interventional Science at University College London. She has held this position since September 2017 with appointments extending to 2034, following previous academic roles as Senior Lecturer and Reader at UCL (2013-2017) and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Brunel University (2003-2013).
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Science (Honours) from Beihang University (formerly Beijing Institute of Aeronautics), China, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Song's research expertise spans polymers, nanomaterials, and nanocomposites for biomedical applications, with particular focus on their interaction with biological cells, tissues, and organs. Her pioneering work includes developing multi-responsive elastomers, hydrogels, and biomanufacturing techniques such as electrospinning and 3D printing for tissue engineering, artificial organs, and wearable/implantable devices. She has made significant contributions to understanding the liquid crystalline phase of polymers and nanomaterials and their biological cell responses.
Her publication record shows a consistent output of high-impact research, with recent articles (2022-2025) demonstrating a strong focus on piezoelectric nanofiber-based hearing systems, liquid crystalline hydroxyapatite for bone mineralization, light-responsive elastomers, and scalable human iPSC-based disease models. These works reveal a research trajectory emphasizing the convergence of materials science, nanotechnology, and medical applications, particularly in sensory restoration, tissue regeneration, and diagnostic monitoring systems.

As a principal investigator, Dr. Song has secured over 50 research grants totaling more than £10 million from prestigious funding bodies including EPSRC, MRC, BBSRC, Royal Society, Wellcome Trust, Bone Cancer Research Trust, and Motor Neuron Disease Association. She currently leads four major collaborative research grants, including the BCRT Programme grant for Ewing Sarcoma immunotherapy development. Her leadership extends to mentoring numerous PhD and Master's students, with several receiving notable awards for their research. She also serves as a module leader for SURG0087 Biomaterials in Regenerative Medicine and supervises major research projects across undergraduate and graduate levels.
