Dr. Wendy Martin is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences within the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Brunel University London. She serves as the Department Director for Postgraduate Research, overseeing all doctoral research in her department, and is the Convenor of the interdisciplinary Ageing Studies research group.
Dr. Martin holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Warwick (2008), an MA with distinction in Sociological Research in Health Care from Warwick (1999), a BSc First Class Honours in Sociology and Anthropology from Oxford Brookes University (1997), and is a Registered General Nurse from St. Mary's Hospital, London (1986). She also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from the University of Reading (2011).
Dr. Martin's research focuses on the social and cultural aspects of ageing, including digital and ageing, the body and embodiment, care and caring, memory and ageing, materiality, rhythms, and everyday life. Her work employs qualitative methods with a particular emphasis on visual, material, and digital approaches. She has extensive experience in public engagement through photographic exhibitions that have emerged from her research.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary approach, bridging sociology, gerontology, digital studies, and public health. Key trends include exploring the intersection of technology and ageing, examining embodiment in later life, investigating care practices, and developing creative methodological approaches for ageing research. Her work often addresses issues of social inequality, digital inclusion, and wellbeing among older populations.
Dr. Martin has secured research funding from prestigious organizations including UKRI, ESRC, SSHRC, British Academy, Leverhulme Trust, Dunhill Medical Trust, and NIHR. Her current projects include "Sound, Environment and Ageing: Bringing the Outside Into Care Homes" (UKRI, £336,500) and "Sound, Nature and Wellbeing in Ageing" (British Academy, £23,330).

As an experienced doctoral supervisor, Dr. Martin has supervised numerous PhD students and served as both internal and external examiner for PhD vivas. She has also led the MSc Public Health and Health Promotion program and developed key modules on health inequalities, research methods, and dissertations. Her commitment to creative pedagogy is reflected in her recognition as a Recognised Programme Developer within the university.
Dr. Martin's research is strongly connected to her leadership of the Ageing Studies research group at Brunel, which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across departments. Her photographic exhibitions, including "Reimagination: The Reframing of Memories" shown at the Houses of Parliament and Wellcome Collection, demonstrate her commitment to translating research into public engagement.
