Dr. Wendy Hitchmough is an Emeritus Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities. She holds a B.A. from the University of Manchester and a D.Phil from the University of Sussex. Her career includes roles as Curator at Charleston (Bloomsbury artists’ home) and Head of Historic Buildings & Research at Historic Royal Palaces.
Her research focuses on late 19th-20th century art, particularly the Bloomsbury Group and Arts and Crafts Movement. She pioneered digital conservation projects, including the £1m ‘Charleston Regained’ initiative, and led a £7m capital project to expand Charleston Farmhouse’s facilities. At Historic Royal Palaces, she established research partnerships with Queen Mary University and managed heritage sites like the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace.
Awarded Honorary Vice-Presidency of the Voysey Society and membership in the AHRC Peer Review College, her work bridges academic research and public engagement. She co-supervised four AHRC collaborative PhDs and currently advises on heritage interpretation strategies. Regular student office hours are held Monday 13:30-14:30 and Tuesday 12:00-13:00 (term time).
