Dr. Wendy A. Suzuki serves as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Neural Science and Psychology at New York University's Center for Neural Science. Her leadership spans both academic administration and cutting-edge neuroscience research.
Dr. Suzuki's research focuses on the transformative relationship between physical activity and brain function. Her work investigates how aerobic exercise improves learning, memory, and higher cognitive abilities in humans, with particular attention to optimal exercise prescriptions for enhancing academic performance and cognitive function across different age groups. She explores applications for neurological conditions including traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and depression. Previously, her lab conducted 18 years of pioneering research on the neurophysiology of memory, identifying dramatic changes in hippocampal activity during memory formation and examining temporal ordering signals in the brain.
As a prominent science communicator, Dr. Suzuki authored the book Good Anxiety: Harnessing the Power of the Most Misunderstood Emotion, which reframes anxiety as a potential superpower rather than merely a negative state. Her media appearances include CBS This Morning, GMA3, and NPR Life Kit, where she discusses translating scientific findings into practical tools for improving mental wellbeing.
The Suzuki Lab at NYU maintains active research in three primary areas: defining optimal exercise protocols for cognitive enhancement in educational settings, exploring exercise benefits for adult populations including baby boomers, and investigating exercise-based interventions for neurological conditions. The lab includes postdoctoral fellows, laboratory managers, and undergraduate researchers working collaboratively on these neuroscience frontiers.
