Wendelin Werner is a French mathematician of German origin, born on September 23, 1968. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris from 1987 to 1991 and earned a doctorate in science under Jean-François Le Gall at the University of Paris VI in 1993. He held research fellowships at CNRS and ENS before becoming a professor at the University of Paris-Sud in Orsay (1997–2008) while teaching at ENS. Currently, he is a professor at ETH Zurich. His work focuses on probability theory, particularly random walks, Brownian motion, and statistical physics models, including demonstrating the Mandelbrot conjecture regarding the Hausdorff dimension of Brownian motion envelopes (1999).
Werner's achievements include the Fields Medal (2006), membership in the Academy of Sciences (elected 2008), and numerous awards such as the Rollo Davidson Prize and Fermat Prize. His research bridges theoretical probability with applications in mathematical physics, emphasizing stochastic processes and phase transitions.
