Wenbin Tan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia. He is also affiliated with the Cardiovascular Research Center and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at USC. His research focuses on congenital vascular malformations, exosomal biology, and stem cell-based therapies. Key projects include developing iPSC-derived vascular models to study Port Wine Birthmark and Sturge-Weber syndrome, investigating endothelial dysfunction in hypertension, and exploring natural compounds for cardiovascular health. Dr. Tan’s work is supported by NIH, DoD, and ASLSM grants, including an NIH R01 (2018) and DoD Discovery Award (2018).
- Education: B.Sc./M.Sc. in Biochemistry (Central South University, China); Ph.D. in Neurophysiology (UCLA, 2008).
- Research Interests:
- Vascular malformations pathogenesis
- Exosome-mediated signaling
- Endothelial reprogramming for hypertension
- COVID-19 cardiovascular impacts
His lab’s innovations include combining laser therapy with molecular strategies and leveraging exosomes for targeted treatments. Awards include the NIH/NIAMS K01 (2013) and recognition for translational research in vascular diseases.
