Professor Weimin Chen holds a full professorship in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on differential geometry and topology, particularly symplectic geometry, 4-manifolds, and group actions. He has published extensively on topics such as symplectic orbifolds, smooth structures of K3 surfaces, and fixed-point free circle actions.
Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics from Michigan State University (1998), M.S. from the Institute of Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1989), and B.S. from Shandong University, China (1986).
Research Interests include:
- Low-dimensional topology and its applications
- Symplectic topology and geometric group actions
- Orbifold cohomology and smooth structure classification
- Applications of pseudo-holomorphic curves
Recent work emphasizes symplectic G-surfaces, equivariant symplectic cones, and characterizations of smooth K3 structures. He has organized conferences such as the 2022 Clifford Lectures in memory of Slawomir Kwasik and the 2025 Trisectors Workshop on diffeomorphism groups.
Teaching includes courses like Math 300 (Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics) and Math 421 (Complex Variables), with course materials available for smooth manifolds, differential geometry, and symplectic topology.
