Professor Weihsin Gui of the University of California-Riverside specializes in anglophone literatures from South Asia and Southeast Asia, with a focus on postcolonial and globalizing perspectives. As a former contributor to the Year’s Work in English Studies (2014–2017), Gui has shaped critical discourse on Southeast Asian comics, graphic narratives, and urban poetics.
- Education: PhD in English (Brown University, 2008), BA in English and East Asian Studies (Brown University, 2003).
Gui’s research explores intersections of postcolonialism, globalization, and visual culture, particularly in Singaporean and Filipino works. Recent publications analyze noir aesthetics, transnationalism, and the socio-political resonance of comics like Sprawl and Muros: Within Magical Walls. A keynote speaker at MLA 2025, Gui examines how Southeast Asian creators adapt global genres to critique local power structures.
Gui’s scholarship spans journals like Textual Practice, Moving Worlds, and Interventions, with a monograph National Consciousness and Literary Cosmopolitics (Ohio State UP, 2013) and co-edited works including Common Lines and City Spaces (ISEAS, 2014).
