Weihang Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from North Carolina State University, and Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Mechanical/Energy Engineering from Zhejiang University, China.
His research interests span robotics and automation, optimization algorithms, sensor technology, maintenance optimization, additive manufacturing, and biomaterials. He leads the Computational Optimization and Smart Systems Lab, focusing on interdisciplinary projects such as robotic agricultural systems, fault diagnosis, and machine learning applications.
Dr. Zhu coordinates the Mechanical Engineering Technology undergraduate program and has contributed to over 150 publications since 2013, with recent work emphasizing datasets for agricultural robotics, cold spray manufacturing advancements, and multi-user robotic simulation frameworks. His research also addresses challenges in offshore safety culture, pipeline maintenance optimization, and haptic feedback systems for surgical robotics.
He has developed educational tools such as mobile apps for engineering economics learning and collaborated on teacher training programs integrating advanced manufacturing into high school curricula. His work bridges theoretical innovation with practical applications in industry, healthcare, and agriculture.
