Wei Yang is Professor of Horticulture at Oregon State University's College of Agricultural Sciences, leading the blueberry research and extension program at the North Willamette Research & Extension Center. His applied research focuses on optimizing blueberry production systems with emphasis on rootstock development, mechanized harvesting, and pest management in Oregon's primary blueberry growing region.
Research Programs: Current projects include blueberry rootstock propagation/evaluation, rootstock-cultivar interactions, and spotted wing drosophila control strategies. Develops modified harvesters and sanitation protocols to improve fresh-market fruit quality and extend shelf life.
Industry Impact: Creates practical guidelines for machine harvesting fresh-market blueberries and reducing pesticide usage through targeted application methods. Recent work includes hygiene optimization for harvest equipment and deep learning-based bruise detection systems.
