Dr. Wei Xu is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey's School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. He holds a BEng in Materials Engineering from Tsinghua University and a PhD in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Birmingham.
His research focuses on biomedical engineering applications, including finite element modeling of surgical instruments, osseointegration biomechanics, and smart materials for medical devices. Specific areas include shape memory alloys (SMA) and piezoelectric actuators for minimal access surgery and prosthetic limb attachment systems.
Key research projects include 3D finite element modeling of distal osseointegrated implants and SMA-based fixation devices for surgical applications. His work bridges mechanical engineering, materials science, and clinical medicine to advance medical device innovation.
Selected awards include the Best Paper Award at ICRAM'95, Henry Lester Trust Scholarships, and IAEA Fellowship funding. His publications span mechatronics, robotics, and biomedical engineering, with a focus on actuator design, finite element analysis, and surgical material applications.
