Wei-Jun Cai is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the School of Marine Science & Policy within the College of Earth, Ocean & Environment at the University of Delaware. He holds the distinguished Mary A.S. Lighthipe Chair of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, reflecting his leadership and scholarly impact in marine and environmental sciences.
His research focuses on critical aspects of marine chemistry and global biogeochemical cycles. Key areas include air-sea CO2 exchange, carbon cycling in estuaries and coastal oceans, ocean acidification, and the development of advanced chemical sensors for aquatic environments. His work addresses pressing challenges related to climate change and ocean health.
Dr. Cai leads the Cai CO2 Ocean Observation Laboratory (C.O.O.L.), which conducts field observations, experiments, and modeling to understand carbon dynamics in coastal systems. His research bridges observational oceanography with environmental chemistry, contributing to both scientific understanding and policy-relevant knowledge.
He has been recognized with numerous fellowships from leading scientific societies:
- Fellow, American Geophysical Union (AGU)
- Fellow, Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO)
- Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
- Fellow, Geochemical Society (GS)/European Association of Geochemistry (EAG)
Dr. Cai earned his Ph.D. in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego (1992), an M.S. in Marine Science from Ocean University of China, and a B.S. from Xiamen University, China. While specific grant details and advisees are not listed in the source text, his leadership role as Associate Dean underscores his active involvement in mentoring, research administration, and institutional advancement.
