Wayne Yau serves as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at The University of Western Australia's Medical School, affiliated with the Centre for Neuromuscular and Neurological Disorders (Perron Institute). His research spans movement disorders, neurogenetics, and therapeutic interventions.
Dr. Yau's research focuses on the genetic underpinnings of neurological conditions, particularly:
- Genetic causes of dystonia, parkinsonism, and ataxia
- Deep brain stimulation efficacy for movement disorders
- Genome-wide analysis of neurodegenerative conditions
- Neuroimaging correlates of genetic neurological diseases
Recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on genetic movement disorders, with three 2024 papers investigating POLR3A-related disorders, PPP2R5D variants in parkinsonism, and NOTCH2NLC repeat expansions. His research consistently employs whole genome sequencing, cohort analysis, and deep brain stimulation evaluation.
Dr. Yau leads the completed research project 'Improving health outcomes of dystonia through genetics' funded by the Western Australia Department of Health (March 2023-August 2024), demonstrating active grant leadership in neurogenetic research.
