Wayne Li is the James L. Oliver Professor of the Practice of Design and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, holding a joint appointment between the School of Industrial Design and the College of Engineering. He leads interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Innovation and Design Collaborative (IDC) and Design Bloc, fostering collaboration between mechanical engineering and industrial design. His research bridges ethnographic studies, online education innovation, and human-machine interaction in transportation design.
Li earned a Master of Science in Engineering from Stanford University, undergraduate degrees in Fine Arts (Design) and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and additional training in Industrial/Transportation Design from the College for Creative Studies. His career spans industry roles at Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen, IDEO, and Pottery Barn, alongside academic teaching at Stanford and Georgia Tech since 2010. He concurrently operates Wayne Li Design as a principal consultant.
His research emphasizes pedagogical tools like Sketchtivity (an AI-driven sketching tutor) and explores automotive product-service systems. Articles reflect a dual focus on advancing design education through technology and improving material science applications in engineering.
Scientific recognition includes the prestigious James L. Oliver Professorship. His work integrates industry experience with academic rigor, addressing challenges from crash energy absorption in metal foams to fostering creativity in engineering students.
