Wayne Feltz is the Associate Director – Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison's Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), where he has held researcher and scientist roles since 1994. He leads a research team at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), focusing on satellite-based weather decision support systems to enhance aviation weather hazard forecasting through collaborations with FAA, NOAA, NASA, and military agencies. His work involves validating meteorological technology and managing satellite remote sensing projects.
His research interests span the utilization of satellite observations for aviation weather hazards (turbulence, convection, winds, volcanic ash), remote sensing of atmospheric thermodynamic state, infrared hyperspectral resolution for weather observations, and simulating future satellite impacts on severe weather nowcasting. He has led field experiments like PECAN and participated in over 15 campaigns, including STORM-FEST, CAMEX, and ARM programs.
He has served on international conference committees, chaired sessions globally, and co-chaired the GOES-R Aviation Algorithm Working Group. He was an Editor for the American Meteorological Society Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology (2009–2012).
