Wayne Carpenter is a Senior Research & Development Engineer and Staff Instructor at the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA), University of Mississippi. His expertise spans acoustics engineering and field-deployable systems design for environmental monitoring. He holds degrees in Physics (Millsaps College, 2000), Mechanical Engineering (Washington University in St. Louis, 2002), and an MBA (University of Mississippi, 2007).
Research focuses on underwater acoustics, sediment transport, and ecological applications. Projects include USDA-funded sonar systems for catfish ponds, bedload transport studies in rivers like the Elwha and Trinity, and acoustic analysis of sea turtle interactions with fishing equipment. His work integrates laser interferometric sensors and acoustic signal modeling for natural resource management.
Collaborations include the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Naval Research, U.S. Forestry Service, and Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program. He leads multidisciplinary teams in developing DSP-based data collection systems for long-term environmental monitoring.
