Dr. James Miller is a Professor of Ocean Engineering and Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. He specializes in acoustical oceanography, sonar systems engineering, and underwater vehicle design. His research focuses on acoustic propagation in shallow water, sediment properties, and the effects of ocean noise on marine life. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Rhode Island and co-founded FarSounder, Inc., a company developing advanced navigation systems for marine environments.
Education: Sc.D. (MIT-WHOI, 1987), M.S. (Stanford, 1981), B.S. (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 1979). His work spans underwater acoustics, geoacoustic inversion, and offshore wind farm noise analysis. Key projects include studies on the New England Mud Patch and acoustic monitoring for marine mammals.
Research highlights include sediment parameter estimation using machine learning, passive acoustic monitoring of wind farm construction, and seismic wave analysis. He leads grants on sediment-borne disturbances, offshore wind energy, and naval STEM education. His publications (over 50 listed) address acoustic propagation modeling, environmental inversion, and marine soundscapes.
Grants include leadership in projects funded by the Office of Naval Research, DOI, and industry partners like HDR/e2M. Awards and recognition are not explicitly listed, but his contributions to underwater acoustics are well-established in peer-reviewed journals.
