Warren Sack is Chair and Professor of Film + Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He holds affiliate roles in the Digital Arts & New Media (DANM) Program, Computational Media, and other interdisciplinary departments. His academic journey includes visiting professorships at Sciences Po, Télécom ParisTech, and the Fondation Maison des sciences de l'homme in France.
Education: PhD in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT Media Lab (2000), SM from MIT (1994), and BA in Computer Science and Psychology from Yale (1985). His work bridges media theory, software design, and art, focusing on online public discourse and computational tools for deliberation.
Research interests encompass media theory, science and technology studies, and software studies. Notable projects include Metavid (an open archive of congressional video) and Agonistics (a language game artwork). His book The Software Arts (MIT Press, 2019) explores software as a creative medium.
He has secured grants totaling over $5M from NSF, Sunlight Foundation, and others, supporting projects like deliberation interfaces and participatory media systems. Awards include ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowship and Paris Institute for Advanced Study Fellowships.
